Dell u3415w resolution of 3440×1440 and older machines [works]

February 14, 2016

2000557394The big question I had when buying the ultra wide-screen monitor with a 3440×1440 resolution is if my older machines would all support it.

– Dell Latitude 6430u
– MacBook Air Mid 2013
– Mac Pro 1,1 with ATI Radeon HD 5770

I could not find a definite answer, so I took the gamble and found out, they all work.
The Dell, can drive the monitor through HDMI as a second monitor. I found out that not extending the desktop, but using it as the single display benefits performance a lot.

The MacBook Air mid 2013 has no trouble driving the screen through the mini display port to HDMI or mDP. The mDP has the advantage of being 50Hz PAL or 60Hz NTSC, while HDMI is limited to 30Hz.

The Mac Pro 1,1 with the ATI Radeon HD 5770 drives the monitor without any problems using the mDP port to HDMI. I managed to run it ones using the mDP to mDP cable, but after sleep the screen did not wake up. Not sure what causes this, but through HDMI is works flawlessly.

The things that I’m still figuring out:
– there is a little backlight bleed in dark scenes in movies. See if it grows on me or not.
– the Mac Pro does not pass the sound through the mDP to HDMI connection. The Mac Book Air does and so does the Dell. So I’m trying to figure out why.

Just thought I’d share my results, for those of you trying to figure this out.

Finally some proof:

Steve’s Feadship ‘Venus’

October 28, 2012

Today we saw a new Feadship leaving the docks. It’s supposedly the ship of late Steve Jobs. I it’s named ‘Venus’. Seeing the seven iMacs on the bridge and the enormous amounts of glass it might indeed be Steve’s yacht.

I’ve published the movie on Youtube. Enjoy!

Mac Pro 1,1 upgrade rulez

February 29, 2012

I bit the bullet and upgraded my MacPro 1,1 from a dual duo-core at 2.66 Mhz to a dual quad-core at 2.66 Mhz. In addition I added the ATI HD 5770 video card as well. So my Mac Pro is ready for another few years of service. At least that is what I thought, until I read about Mountain Lion. Luckily all is not lost and I might be able to run it after all. But it probably will be a bumpy ride praying OSX updates will not break the fix.

Re-download Lion after upgrade

August 12, 2011

If you wan’t to have you’re Lion-on-a-Stick here’s how…

After installing Lion, the installer image is deleted from the program folder. Some people have partial success getting the installer again to burn it on an USB stick. You can easily re-download Lion as mentioned in this TUAW article and place it on a stick.

In short: Open the App Store application. By holding the option key (alt) and clicking on the purchased items (top icon bar) you can download Lion again. The whole 3.75GB 😉

Swap drive under Time Machine

April 30, 2011

The other day I replaced a 500GB hard disk in my Mac Pro with a larger 2TB model.

I planned to use the old and proven approach of attaching the new disk, copying all the files from the old to the new and removing the new.

But then it dawned on me, that Time Machine would not recognize the swap and would backup all the data on the new disk again! Effectively doubling that set of data in my Time Machine volume.

To replace the disk the correct way you should:

iPhone 3G downgrade (solved)

July 21, 2010

The slow speed of my iPhone 3G after the iOS4 upgrade started to irritate me lately. It was skipping music while writing an e-mail. The camera was unbelievable slow and I had trouble accepting calls. I tried most of the tips to make it work like a reset and restore, but nothing helped.

Today I decided it was enough and I downgraded the phone to 3.1.3. Thanks to Peter’s post it was a breeze and my phone is snappy again. If you have the same problems, I advise you to do the same.

Update: here’s the video of what I mean, and worse, mine does not answer the call!!!

Update 30/06: WSJ has published an item about the bad performance as wel 😉

Update 12/12: The problem is solved.

Time Machine tips

July 14, 2010

I found a great read on Time Machine from pondini. He has constructed a FAQ with some interesting information about Time Machine and how it does what it does.
