How to take apart a Duplo train
I have two types of Duplo electrical trains. The Intelli train and the regular train (e.g. 3772). They need some repair and servicing, but are hard to open. I found a short description opening the Intelli train, but did not yet manage to get it open without damaging it.
The best way to open the Duplo train is by using the following parts:
- pair of pliers
- duct tape
- two small pieces of cardboard
- screwdriver bit (flat)
Prepare the pliers by taping the two pieces of cardboard to protect the pliers beak. This prevents the pliers from damaging the train.
Now place the screwdriver bit exactly on the visible yellow tabs before applying pressure with the pliers.
Now carefully apply pressure to the bit using the pliers.
Sadly the Intelli train does not have the large black bumpers so, this method does not work on that type of train. I need to find another approach for that one 😉

Pim, hartstikke bedankt voor het posten van precies dat deel van de demontage waarop ik bijna mijn botte kracht had willen inzetten….Nu keurig geopend en zand er uit (de loc is niet geschikt voor gebruik in de zandbak). Wat kan Google toch fantastisch werken!

Hey Pim, zoontje heeft een duplo trein 5609, deze maakt enkel de geluiden meer en rijdt niet meer, ook opendraaien of wat denk je?

Je hebt dan drie opties 😉
1. Contact met lego. Soms kunnen ze wat voor je betekenen. Ik vind hun service erg goed. Bijv. als er een defect is met iets uit een doos die je koopt. Dat gebeurd bijna niet, maar als het je wel overkomt is de service gewoon prima en snel.
2. Hem open maken en kijken of je er achter kan komen wat er aan de hand is. Vervolgens kijken of je het betreffende onderdeel kan regelen.
3. Het zo laten 😉

Optie 4 is natuurlijk de trein laten herstellen. Er zijn verschillende mensen die dit als hobby doen, dan weet je zeker dat het perfect hersteld wordt. Zie bv ook http://link.marktplaats.nl/m1109736948

dat helpt ons al een eind op weg… maar ik krijg de laatste twee klemmetjes toch niet los. Aan welke kant zit het klem? Naar binnen of buiten? Ik heb geprobeerd het los te maken, maar moet teveel kracht zetten om het los te drukken….

Ja, hoe ga ik dat nou uitleggen. Ik had natuurlijk even een foto moeten maken toen ik hem uit elkaar had.
Wanneer je de bovenkant op de onderkant klikt dan worden de gele palletjes naar binnen gedrukt, om daarna vast te klikken. Dus om ze los te maken moeten ze ook weer naar binnen gedrukt worden.

I have had to take my sons apart as the drive cog shattered : ( I used a medium sized Flat bladed screwdriver to ease out the rear bumper from the pegs so I could release them without breaking them. Do you know what size cog the standard train has and how many teeth? I’m hoping to use a replacement one from the newer train but I havn’t found any pictures of the motor workings yet.

Sorry, but I have no photo from the inside of the train. I did call Lego and they told me there are no servicable parts. So you indeed need to use another train for parts. Good luck.

Pim, great hint on how to open the train. I opened the regular train first and later also the intellitrain, by removing the duct tape from one side of the pliers and placing that side on the thin plastic edge of the bumper. Place the intellitrain on its side on the edge of a table. Use left hand to hold the screw bit and train in position. Use right hand to operate the pliers.
Do you want to share what was defect inside the train and if/how you were able to repair it?

David, thanx for the tip. My train was noisy and cought a lot of dust. I thought about replacing the gears, but that was not necesarry. So nothing got replaced 😉

Thanks for the hint. Putting the edge of the black bumper on a table and pushing down on the tabs with a screwdriver worked on the Intelligent Train engine.

I’ve done the same on my Sons Duplo train (The older 2961bc model). Hard work getting it apart and I’ve found that the gearing has gone.
Would you know where to get a new gearing set? I’ve tried Lego and no joy.

Actually, I have no idea. Lego only replaces entire trains and no parts. So if you need to inspect or clean the train opening help 😉 But I,m not aware of part replacements.

Hi, I repaired five Intellitrains and two cargo trains replacing one of the gear wheels. These Duplo trains made a rattling sound, ran slowly and/or the wheels blocked regularly. The gear wheel which is fitted on the motor axis, was broken (between two teeth) causing the rattling sound. Replacement gear wheels are hard to find. I managed to buy a couple of mini toys using a similar gear wheel which fitted well in the trains. Cheers, David

Hi David – I’ve repaired few duplo trains for friends myself, but only mechanical problems. Now, I’m facing one intelli train, which works as usual, just runs horribly slow even on fresh batteries. You mentioned slow trains – any chance you will recall what was the problem?

Hi Jan,
The slow moving trains I repaired were caused by the clog wheel (small gear on motor axle) as well. In my experience problems are in 70% of cases caused either by this small gear and the rest by leaking batteries. David

Did someone has already found the right gear for the engine axis.
How many teeth counts the gear. I count 9 teeths but mayby 1 is gone.

Conrad sells a lot of gear wheels but unfortunately none of them fit the Duplo train. I used custom made gear wheels at €12,50 a piece. Has anyone found a low cost spare yet?

Can you help me? I’m trying to fix the gear which is onto the axis of the motor. To do that I’ve got to unscrew the inner part of the train. 4 screws came out nicely, the last one is ‘hidden’ behind the rear wheel of the vehicle.
How do I remove (if needed at all) the wheel to remove that last screw?

Erik, do NOT remove the wheel. It’s glued over the axle and almost impossible to remount. Just leave the last screw in and gently bend the black plastic outwards. This allows to take the motor out. (easy with the intellitrain, takes more determination with the cargo train). A crack in the cog wheel is hard to find. While mounted, you may see a black line between two gear teeth indicating the crack. While unmounted, you can push the crack open with a finger nail. Good luck!

Fijn te lezen dat er een mogelijkheid is om de trein te openen.
Heb alles gedaan zoals je omschreven hebt.
Maar toch lukt het me niet.
Het is me niet duidelijk of het bitje bovenop het gele pinnentje moet blijven staan, want bij mij schiet hij er naast naar de achterkant (met het gevolg dat het plastic toch wat verbogen is). Kilikt het dan vervolgens gewoon los?
En in welke volgorde moet je te werk gaan, is de voorkant of eerst de achterkant?

Hoi Jet,
Schroef eerst alle schroefjes uit de onderkant. Kies een bitje dat vrijwel even breed/lang is als het gele streepje. De waterpomptang heeft meerdere standen. Kies een stand zodat de tang haaks (recht) op het bitje staat. Doe geen plakband op één bek van de tang, dan schiet ‘íe niet zo snel van het bitje af. Je moet het bitje in de juiste positie houden (dus op het gele streepje) en tegelijk behoorlijk kracht zetten. Je hoeft het alleen aan de achterkant te doen, de voorkant gaat daarna vanzelf open. Ik heb drie Intelli trains uit 2002 maar helaas werken de knopjes niet allemaal meer lekker, hierdoor reageren de treinen niet goed meer op de commando’s van de blokjes op de rails. Weet iemand toevallig hoe je de knoppen weer aan het werk kunt krijgen? Ik vermoed dat ze moeten worden schoongemaakt, maar waarmee?

@Hans-Peter: Bij de voorwielen zit een printplaatje met daarop een aantal contactveertjes. Deze contactveertjes worden bediend door de plastic nokjes aan de onderkant van de intellitrein. Na opening van de trein kan je de kontactveertjes eenvoudig schoonmaken. Ik gebruik daarvoor een beetje contactspray uit een spuitbusje van kontact chemie, op een wattenstaafje. Als je dat niet hebt zal een beetje spiritus ook wel werken. Maak de vergulde contactvlakjes op het printplaatje schoon en veeg voorzichtig de veertjes schoon. Pas op dat je de veertjes niet verbuigen. Succes, David

Interessante discussie! Ook hier veel pogingen om de Cargo trein te openen maar het is gelukt. Het bekende defect: het eerder genoemde tandwiel (zijn het nou 9 of 10 tanden?) is gebroken. De zoektocht is begonnen naar een vergelijkbaar tandwiel. Heeft iemand al ontdekt in welk speelgoed een vergelijkbaar tandwiel zit of waar je er 1 los kunt kopen? BvD

Het was een hele zoektocht om een goed passende tandwielen te vinden.
Er is lastig aan te komen, en mogelijk worden ze nog moeilijker te krijgen.
Ondertussen ben ik nog op zoek naar goedkopere vervangers.

Hi, there – thanks for the help in getting the train open. When we look inside the red wire is loose. Do you know where it joins up? There appears to be only one hole and that leads to some soldering underneath.

If it is the type of train like above…..
The red wire should go to the (positive) battery clamp.
You’ll see a black wire to the negative clamp.
And 2 black wires to a (glass) sensor.

Great website, I’ve been using it all week trying to fix my sons Duplo Train. By opening it the first time and glueing the small wheel of the motor on the axis, the small PCB in the front came loose. I placed it back in the wrong way not knowing that is was a glass sensor in stead of a resistance. I’ve just reopened the train and placed the PCB in the correct way and the train is going great again! Hopefully the glue will hold on the small wheel.. Any ideas on the best glue for this job?

ik heb vandaag een mooie set gekocht, bij thuiskomst wilde ik hem uitproberen. Batterijen (nieuwe) in de trein gedaan, maar geen leven.
Ik heb u geprobeerd te vinden op marktplaats maar geen succes.
Repareert u nog duplo treinen?

Petra, Het spijt me, maar ik repareer geen treinen. Ik heb zelf een trein, die had veel vuil erin. Het leek me handig om te beschrijven hoe ik hem open heb gekregen omdat dit best wel lastig is. Wist je dat jij bij lego zelf vervangende onderdelen / producten kan bestellen? Dus bijvoorbeeld een losse locomotief.

Hoi, net mijn 2933 train aan de achterkant op deze manier open gemaakt. Werkt perfect. Maar hoe de voorkant? Enig idee?

Deze is relatief lastig.
De 2 achterste puntjes zou je als bovenstaande kunnen doen.
Dit type grijpt ook in de 3 zij-gleuven en 1 grote aan de voorkant.
De grote aan de voorkant kun je klein schroevendraaiertje in steken en laten zitten.
Dan achter licht open duwen en tegelijk de zijkant iets open steken. Je kan klein schroevendraaiertje in de gleuf naar beneden steken en iets wrikken. Je meot dit dus drie keer doen om de onderbak geheel los te klikken. Parallel eraan moet je dus ook achter en voor open wrikken. Eigenlijk heb je 4 handen nodig!Je krijgt deze bijna niet open zonder beschadiging!
Gewoon heel rustig stapje voor stapje.
Het lukt me nu wel maar das na vele malen oefenen 😉
Het is iig niet mn favoriete trein om te openen!!

Treintje openen is niet zo’n probleem. Rustig aan en goed kijken. Mijn aandrijftandwiel is gebroken. Ik heb hem nu gelijmd en de trein rijdt weer. Maar kan iemand mij een tip geven waar ik een nieuwe kan kopen?

Beste Pim, de trein is open. Probleem is dat hij na elke 50 cm rijden al uit gaat. Binnenkant ziet er schoon uit, wat kan het probleem zijn?

Gaat dit om het type zoals hierboven afgebeeld?
Kijk eens naar de voorwielen.
Deze moeten draaien tijdens het rijden.
Er zit nl een magneet op de as en die komt iedere omwenteling langs de sensor.
Dit is een beveiliging.

Beste Pim, je hebt gelijk. De voorwielen lijken nauwelijks contact te maken met de rails. Op de voorwielen ontbreekt ook een antislip-laag die wel op de achterwielen zit. Wat zouden we hieraan kunnen doen? Nieuwe voorwieltjes?

Voorwielen moeten gewoon vrij kunnen draaien.
Er zit idd geen anti sliplaag op de voorwielen.
de gele bovenkan houd de wielen op hun plek tijdens rijden. Kijk even of de gele pennen niet te ver weg gesleten zijn.
dan ligt de onderbak te laag naar de rails.

Dank Pim voor de snelle reactie! In die pennen zijn inderdaad halve boogjes ingesleten (een neefje rijdt soms uren lang handmatig met de trein over de vloer…) Is het mogelijk om die pennetjes weer op lengte te krijgen?

Ik heb de trein inmiddels open. Ik zie ook dat het kleinste tandwiel, aan het motortje het probleem is. Ik krijg echter de schroeven niet los aan de zijkant, zodat ik de tandwielen kan verwijderen. Iemand tips?

deze zitten soms erg vast.
ikzelf zet een tang haaks op mn schroevendraaier om ze los te krijgen.
LET WEL haal de achterwielen niet los vd as.
De kans is dat je ze niet mooi terug krijgt.

En even vanochtend een goede schroevendraaier gekocht, ipv die standaard ‘horloge’ setjes. Schroefjes meteen zonder problemen los en het kleinste tandwiel lijkt inderdaad gescheurd te zijn. Iemand die nog een alternatief heeft voor dit kleine tandwiel? Anders ga ik hem wellicht even 3d printen.

Bedankt voor je aanbod. Maar ik ga eerst even kijken of ik een goedkoper alternatief kan vinden. Ik vind 12,5 euro voor een plastic tandwiel redelijk prijzig. Ik heb voor dat geld een Robinsion tandwiel van gehard staal. Ik zie niet in waarom dat zo prijzig moet zijn.
Mocht ik niets vinden, kom ik vanzelf bij je terug.

je kan de zijkant ook los wrikken.
voorzichtig dunne schroevendraaier in de uitsparing steken en de onderbak los vd bovenbak steken.
sommige treinen lijkt wel of de beide kanten verkleefd zitten.
beetje los wrikken over gehele lengte.

Hallo,
Ik ben op zoek naar hulp bij reparatie van een Duplo Intelli Trein. Het Intelli gedeelte werkt niet meer. Hij leest de plaatjes dus niet meer en ook de twee knoppen bovenop de trein (fuel en nog iets) doen niets. De trein gaat verder wel gewoon op en neer.
Heeft iemand dit eerder meegemaakt en weet iemand hoe dit te verhelpen ?
Verder is het voor mij niet mogelijk om de trein echt uit elkaar te halen. Ben erg benieuwd naar tips op dat vlak.

knoppen bovenop werken enkel ism code stenen.
dat de trein niet reageert op de stenen is relatief makkelijk op te lossen.
ligt er ook aan hoeveel en warvoor gereedschap je bezit.
een soldeerboud zou ideaal zijn.

Ik kamp ook met een (2e hands) trein die niet meer reageert op de codestenen. De voelers lijken iets niet te raken en hangen er een beetje bij. Ik krijg de trein niet open wat ik ook probeer.

Op de rommelmarkt een intelli-trein gekocht, maar deze werkte niet. Vandaag de 2933 intelli-trein gerepareerd. Met de tips op deze pagina uit elkaar gehaald, maar ontdekte niet iets dat er raar uit zag. De houders van de batterijen uit het onderstel gehaald en deze in de “groene” loco-behuizing gedaan. Batterijen erin en de trein werkte. Blijkbaar zijn nieuwere oplaadbare batterijen dikker, waardoor ze krap in de “gele” behuizing passen en niet goed de “min” raken. De lipjes van de “min” iets naar voeren gebogen, waardoor ze beter voorbij het “gele” plastic komen. Na het in elkaar zetten van de trein en de batterijen er weer in zetten, doet die het weer. Batterijen zitten inderdaad krapper, maar de trein doet het weer. Als de trein dus echt niets meer doet, eerst controleren of niet dit het probleem is.

Ik heb pas een 2e hands duplo trein (3772) gekocht voor mijn zoon..
Maar nu ratelt hij tijdens het rijden..en nu las ik dat dat kon liggen aan een kapot tandwiel…ik heb de trein nog niet los gehaald maar wil dat vanmiddag ff proberen om te kijken waar het aan ligt

Ik heb het probleem gevonden..het is het tandwieltje dat aan de motor vast zit..
Kan ik deze nog ergens vinden of bestelen…
ik zou er erg mee geholpen zijn..

Yeah! We hebben een tandwiel gevonden, zat in de frictiemotor van een kermis autootje (op de achteras). Weliswaar 10 tands maar de trein rijdt er prima mee. Onze intellitrein is gemaakt!

En hier nog iemand met hetzelfde probleem: het tandwiel op de as van de wielen zit een scheur in. Betreft ook een Intelli-trein (met marginale beschadigingen geopend dankzij dit blog). De rest van de tandwielen heb ik zo goed mogelijk bekeken maar wel op hun plaats gelaten. Ga er vanuit dat als het eenmaal gebroken is dat dat de krachten opvangt.
Hoe kom ik aan een passend vervangend tandwiel voor op de as? (bovengenoemde marktplaats ad is niet meer actief) Kun je een nieuw tandwiel er gewoon opschuiven?

Many thanks for your hints. I got a used cargo train for my twins today, but after 10 minutes the top button that starts it got stuck, leading to a lot of shrieking and crying.
I just opened the train up with your plier method and dug my way all the way through to the see the button from below. Am I missing a spring or something? What is providing the restoring force for the button? It seems to just “hang in there”, with a long yellow protrusion coming down to make contact with the mini push button on the circuit board. (I hope this mini button is not supposed to push it back up? Because that would seem like very flimsy design.)

the big button should be forced up by the small button.
I agree it is rather small.
you can clean ans smoothen the parts the button needs to move freely.
you can otherwise dismantle the gears and the enginen.
you can put a small part of a spunge on top of the engine this will force the button up.

Armin, I did not dig this deep into my train. So I have no mental picture of what you are running into here. I checked the button from the outside and it feels like it’s micro switch based. So I do not expect a spring of some sort. But am not sure. If it’s indeed a micro switch and it’s integrated into the circuit board, it would be more difficult to fix. I am afraid I can’t help you any further, but someone else might…
Do you have picture of what you are looking at?

Many thanks for your advice. I feared that the small button had to do all the work here. I like the idea of a small sponge on top of the motor to help with forcing the button back up. I’ll give that a try. (If that fails I’m going to drill a neat hole somewhere and place my own small push button. I could finally dig into my push-button collection 😉

Thanks for the offer. Yes, it turned out to be easy to change the switch. (The hardest part, really, was opening up the train.)
I took out the original micro switch and drilled a large hole into the plastic push button. Then I soldered two wires to the board that I connected to a fairly large, red pushbutton. The new button happened to fit really well and snug into the drilled-out plastic button. So now I have a train with a cartoonish looking, heavy-duty red button on top. It kind of looks like a smokestack, and it works really well.
Regarding reverse and stop: the model I have can already reverse and stop. (It’s supposed to be a diesel freight engine, I guess.) There are small switch buttons at the bottom. One turns it on forward, the other one reverses it. If both are pushed the train stops. I didn’t know this wasn’t standard behavior in all Duplo trains.

I’ve both “intelli” and standard new locos. My goal is to add at least “stop” function (like on intelli by tracks) on the new loco (reverse is probably to hard without remaking all the electronic). If someone has ideas to do that…!

replacing the switch if you have these is indeed simple!
the latest train (new model) the gears are not really for running both ways.
it is possible but the gearing makes more noise.
Stopping can be added but I would use a reed contacr. and add in the code brics a magnet.
reed sensor can be places parallel over the start stop button.

HI I was able to open my daughters Intelli train by using the method mentioned above as a guideline. However as the Intelli train does not have the large back bumpers I used a slightly different approach that does not require the pliers.
I used the method with the flat screwdriver bit but instead of using pliers I used a hammer. All I had to do was use a small wooden plank that has a square side. I used a wooden stick to stir paint.
I have placed that under the black ridge of the back of the train bumper just to ensure the yellow part of the main case is about one centimeter off the surface.
Then I used the hammer and the flat screwdriver bit to gently force the small yellow tabs down.
Worked like a charm and did not damage the train. So the same method basically but easier as it does not require the pliers. And in my case the bumpers would not have “meat” enough to support the pliers.

dit is niet mijn blog, maar reageer er wel in.
toch is hoogstwaarschijnlijk het kleine tandwieltje op de electromotor gebarsten.
kijk maar eens goed zie je tussen de tandjes een zwart streepje.
ben al tijden op zoek naar deze tandwielen.
hoop op kort termijn 2 verschillende type tandwielen te kunnen testen.
dan ga ik weer door met reparatie.

Hoi allen, ik heb 3 treintjes, waarbij de het grote tandwiel wat extract verticaal staat los zit. Bij alle 3 de tandwieltjes is het kleine puntje gebroken waarmee het tandwieltje op zijn plaatsgevonden worden het zwarte frame. Iemand een idee (of houd iemand dit tandwieltje over :-)?

Ik heb een intellitrein die langzaam rijdt.
De tandwielen lijken allemaal in orde. Ik denk dat er veel hondeharen opgehoopt zitten
achter de aandrijfwielen, weet iemand hoe ik die er af krijg zonder wat stuk te maken?

De achterwielen zijn alleen met wat kracht te verwijderen, en de kans is groot dat ze niet meer goed terug te krijgen zijn. Flink peuteren met een lange speld langs het zwarte plastic wil wel eens helpen. De kans is echter bijzonder groot dat je ook een kapot motortandwiel hebt, het is namelijk moeilijk zichtbaar.

ok, bedankt. Dat heb ik gedaan, en hij rijdt weer goed. Er is inderdaad een breuk zichtbaar in het motortandwiel maar daar lijkt hij geen last van te hebben. Zijn die tandwieltjes nou wel te vervangen of niet?

Ik heb blijkbaar een iets ander model dat aan de voorkant ook nog het nodige wrikwerk nodig had. Er zit daar ook nog een brede klemconstructie (zoals aan de achterkant.) Ik heb die losgekregen door de voorkant van de bodem wat naar voren te buigen zodat het haakmechanisme vrij komt. (Met een schroevendraaier).
In mijn loc lijken alle tandwielen prima in orde. Wel zijn de lagers van de aangedreven as slecht. Er komt zo’n trilling in waaraan je hoort dat het niet meer lekker loopt.
Met wat voor smeermiddel kan ik die lagers het beste smeren? Het lijken nijlon achtige lagers en ik heb ooit geleerd dat je dat met groene zeep smeert, maar ik kan het niet goed zien.

hier ook een defecte trein. na batterij er in gedaan te hebben ratelt trein en verder niets. meerder batterijen erin,maar helpt niets. trein opengemaakt maar zie niets vreemds wieltjes lijken wel vast te zitten, maar dat hoort zo? tandwielen zit ook niet veel beweging in, kan ze klein stukje ronddraaien… Enig idee iemand?

Heb zelfde probleem, het aller kleinste tandwiel is gebarsten op de as van de motor. probeer ergens een nieuw tandwiel te vinden nog niet gevonden….

Yes! The remark about the sensor on the front wheel did it! Symptom: train stopped after 30cm. Tried to pry it open. Front no problem but cant open the back side. Almost planned to use brute force but than I read about the sensor. Lifted the front and removed the front wheels. A lot of lint/dust clogged around the axle. Especially near the magnet. Removed it and after reassembly: presto! It worked again!

Weet ook dat dit een destructieve manier is, er wordt gezaagd en ook de manier van openen geeft grote kans op schade. Ik heb de tandwielen ruim op voorraad, maar doe ook reparaties, waarbij ik ook contactvlakken, batterijcontacten, draadbreuken, smeerwerk, en schoonmaakwerk doe, ik heb vele reserveonderdelen op voorraad. Dit alles met garantie, voor slechts 12,50. Er wordt niet gezaagd, geen schrammen gemaakt, en het treintje kan dan weer jaren mee.

Hoi,
Ik zoek een tandwieltje en hoop dat u deze heeft.
Ik las dat u repareert en meer.
Het type trein weet ik nu niet maar kan ik evt opzoeken.
Het gaat om het type trein dat automatisch stop bij botsen en het is een klein wit tandwiel dat direct op de ass zit van de electro motor.
Als ik een email krijg kan ik ook foto’s mailen.

My problem was that my son brought it into the shower… The effect was that it during dry up started to make the starting sound in the night so I had to remove the batteries to make it stop!
I had to open it in order to wipe of some water beneath the rubber buttons that still remained. Had great help from this page.

Watch out with sanding these terminals too much. The copper underneath the chrome toplayer will quicky show new corrosion. I clean these with a fiberglass pen. If the chrome layer is damaged, replacing the terminals is a better option.

Instead of using a screwdriver you can also use two plastic business cards. If you stick two corner in the back you can also open the train very easy without damaging the plastic.

Ik heb een tweedehands trein gekocht. De slimme trein met de stopstenen. Nu zit er ook een wagon onderstel bij met batterijen AAA. Aan de onderkant zitten er twee lampjes. Als ik de batterijen er in doe, gebeurt er niets. Heeft iemand enig idee wat er zou moeten gebeuren als hij zou werken?
